On Jul. 1, 2021, thousands of people in Toronto gathered under the banner of "Cancel Canada Day" to remember Canada’s history of the residential school system that resulted in the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves of Indigenous children and youth on former residential school properties across the country. An afternoon protest at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto was held with hundreds participating in a sit in, speeches, drumming, dancers in regalia, circle dances, and a candlelight vigil with children’s shoes marking those who died.
