Hello, I am Sabah!

For the curious ones, Sabah means dawn in Arabic. I was born in Bangladesh but I have lived most of my life in Canada. As a first-generation South Asian immigrant, my life has been shaped in this space of the merging of two worlds.

I was in high school when I developed my first film inside a dark room. It was also in my teens when I began working in the student newspaper, and then later in university as part of the editorial collective.

I traveled to East Africa for an international internship opportunity while I was studying in university, and it was then when I fully realized my love for photography. Alongside my duties, I took on every initiative to use my camera to document the world around me

I completed my undergraduate degree in international development and women’s studies at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After graduating university and working in policy development in Ontario Public Service, I decided to follow my inherent artistic bent and my curiosity about documentary photography. In 2022, I graduated with a diploma in photojournalism from Loyalist College, and have since completed an internship at CBC News’ Toronto bureau.

Packing my life in a suitcase and moving countries as a young person deeply impacted my fluid view of what is considered ‘home’ and my place in the world. As I evolve as a visual storyteller and an artist, I want to continue telling stories shaping the world I inhabit, which are informed by migration, social and environmental justice, intersectional identities, systems thinking and solutions journalism.
